Fleeing and Eluding in a Vehicle

In Michigan, if a driver of a motor vehicle is given a visual or audible signal by a police or conservation officer to bring their vehicle to a stop, they must not willfully fail to obey that direction by increasing the speed of the vehicle or otherwise attempting to flee or elude the officer 1.

This law is outlined in Section 257.602a of the Michigan Vehicle Code.

The penalties for fleeing and eluding vary depending on the degree of the offense and can range from a felony punishable by imprisonment for not more than 2 years or a fine of not more than $500.00, or both for fourth-degree fleeing and eluding to a felony punishable by imprisonment for not more than 15 years and a fine of up to $5000 for first-degree fleeing and eluding.
